In this seminar/lab course we will explore the rapidly expanding and exciting domain of robotics as it applies to architecture. We will examine the relationship of, and potentials embodied in, industrial robotic manipulators and their many present and future applications to architectural conceptualization, design, fabrication and construction. Underlying the course is the connection between the notions of technology, craft and design. As the flow of decisions and information from architectural concept through design to construction is constantly re-examined, robotics presents a challenge and an opportunity to bring the design process into closer alignment with production. In this course we take up the challenge to critically examine robotics in the context of what it can yield, and the many ways it might inspire, inform and guide the design process. We will also examine the professional implications and the societal/economic effects and outcomes of automation and the increasing use of robotics.
